I've talked about my efforts with One Laptop per Child in Jamaica before. It all started at the Decision Sciences Institute conference held in Phoenix, AZ back in 2007, where I ran into a colleague, Evan Duggan (Executive Director of the Mona School of Business at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica). We came up with several ideas revolving around Free/Open Source Software. This led to my sabbatical visit in 2008 and the creation of the Center of Excellence at UWI. But perhaps the most gratifying event was the official launch of OLPC in Jamaica a few days ago.
It has taken three years of planning and attempts to get this far. We have 115 laptops in the hands of young minds. Let's see how this blossoms in the next few years. We have a rather ambitious research agenda in this project that spans Technology, Education and Outreach. I'll keep you posted on its progress. Of course, if anyone is interested in joining the effort, please let me know at sverma@sfsu.edu
