His teaching focuses on applied information systems, digital skills for management, and the integration of emerging and career-relevant technologies into business education. His contributions to teaching have been recognized with several university- and college-level honors, including the 2025 San Francisco State University Academic Senate Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Lam-Larsen Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award (2021–2023), and the Center for Ethical & Sustainable Business Teaching Award (2022).

Ciomek’s work emphasizes experiential, skills-based learning that connects academic coursework with professional practice. In 2018, he conceptualized and launched SF State’s Microsoft Office Specialist certification program, through which more than 1,350 students have participated in certification examinations and earned more than 675 industry-recognized Microsoft certifications. His broader interests include artificial intelligence and educational technology, digital health and the quantified self, digital privacy, and the evolving role of technology in business and society.

Originally from Germany, Ciomek earned a degree in Business Administration from Fulda University of Applied Sciences and an MBA from San Francisco State University. Before entering academia, he worked in telecommunications, enterprise software marketing, e-commerce, and entrepreneurship in Germany and the San Francisco Bay Area. His international background and professional experience inform his commitment to preparing students for an increasingly technology-driven and globally connected workplace.

Beyond the classroom, Ciomek has a longstanding interest in lifelong learning, health and longevity, and the ways technology can support human well-being. He has traveled to more than 40 countries across six continents and completed the San Francisco Marathon twice. An avid consumer of audiobooks and emerging technologies, he remains particularly interested in the intersection of technology, behavior, health, and learning.*
